Our little Ninni is the owner of LA CASA DI NINNI (a Facebook page for now and soon her own site) is using this time to introduce one by one all the artists-artisans involved in the project; all done in a funny and original way. This time it was my turn!!!!!

Maid of honour

E venne il felice momento in cui la mia amica Lucy decise di convolare a nozze con il suo Andrea e decise di nominare me medesima sua testimone di nozze. Ergo, organizzazione e regalone; come per tutti i testimoni che si rispettino. Divertente e entusiasmante la parte organizzativa, condivisa con l'altra testimone della sposa Angela e i testimoni dello sposo: l'addio al nubilato (buon per lei che siamo due tipe tranquille e se l'è cavata con una serata in pizzeria), la consulenza per la scelta degli abiti di entrambi, accessori compresi...beh, poi toccava al regalo: mmmmmm. Non solo sono una squattrinata sempre alle prese con spese-mutuo-bollette, ma sono anche una creativa, no? Quindi un pò perchè non potevo fare a meno di metterci del mio, un pò perchè se anche ne avessi avuti a palate non avrei comunque speso i miei soldi per un regalo banale, ecco l'ideona: L'ALBUM PER GLI SPOSI.
Si comincia:

- negozio di tessuti ad Arona, in vetrina un tessuto spettacolare e costoso che come scopro dalla negoziante (professionista non da ieri) si compone di un doppio strato di seta, tutto lavorato in Italia. PRESO.
- album FABRIANO coi fogli grandi, carta di qualità ma leggera abbastanza da rendere la rilegatura semplice una volta "riempite" le pagine. CE L'HO.
- una bella scatola riciclata, riempita con cartoncini, adesivi, immagini, tutto ovviamente senza acidi e lignina per durare per sempre, tutto in arrivo dalla mia mania per lo scrapbook scoppiata in America. Aggiungo anche una scatola nuova di pennarelli STABILO, per non lasciare niente al caso. PRONTA.
...e poi la parte difficile: quella di far girare la scatola tra amici e colleghi di sposo e sposa, libertà di espressione per tutti. E dopo poco più di un mese la raccolta delle pagine sorprende me per prima: colgo l'occasione per ringraziare tutti e complimentarmi: BRAVISSIMI. Chi ha attaccato foto di vecchie vacanze, lettere scritte in adoloscenza alla sposa, ricette, auguri, citazioni e poesie.... anche un mazzetto di fiori secchi!
Rilegato il tutto e consegnato alla sposa la sera del matrimonio. Risultato? Tante lacrime, risate e una frase che non scorderò mai e vale più di tutti i complimenti del mondo: "Mow (come mi chiamano le amiche), se dovessi scappare di casa di corsa per una ragione qualunque, l'album sarebbe la prima cosa che porterei con me!




And so came the happy time when my friend Lucy decided to marry her Prince Charming, Andrea. And she decided to ask me to be her maid of honour, so: a lot of arrangements and a big gift, as any maid of honour is expected to do. It was fun and interesting arranging her bachelorette party (good for her that her cousin Angela, the other maid of honour, and I are nice and good, so we only went out for a pizza), playing the personal shopper helping both of them with dress and accessories...the came the time to pick a present...mmmmm. I am not only a penniless always fighting against loan-bills-expenses, but I am a creative friend, right? So, as I could not avoid being atipical, plus even if I was a millionaire I would have never spent a fortune for an ordinary gift here comes the big idea: THE ALBUM FOR THE BRIDE AND THE GROOM.
Let's start:
- fabric shop in Arona, I see a wonderful and expensive fabric and the owner (a long time professional) tells me it's a double layer of silk, all crafted in Italy. BOUGHT.
- big drawing album from FABRIANO, paper of great quality but light and easy to bind once all pages have been "filled". GOT IT.
- a big recycled box filled with stickers, paper and cardstock, all acid and lignin free so that it will last forever. Everything comes from my scrapbook mania period, when I was in the States. I just add a brand new box of STABILO markers, to make sure everything is done in the right way. READY.
...and now the hardest part, making the box run among all bride's and groom's friends. And after a few weeks the collection of pages surprises me above all: GREAT WORK. All pages were filled with old letters from childhood, pictures of old vacations, recipes, postcards, poetry...even a bouquet of dried flowers!
All bound and delivered to the bride on the wedding evening. Result? Many tears, laughs and words I will never forget that worth more than a million compliments: "Mow, (as my friends call me) if I ever have to run out the house and leave evrything behind, that album would be the first thing I would grab and take with me!

REMAKE

Ecco, rifatto il primo tentativo. Decisamente non ero soddisfatta, troppo difficile quel bottone da infilare, tra l'altro era decentrato (non che io sia miss precisione, anzi...) cosi restava anche tutto storto, come già è di suo dovuto al fatto di usare una giacca, quindi un materiale che per cosi dire ha già le sue forme.
Smontato e tagliato le pagine a metà, ora è davvero tascabile, e il bottone a forma di tappo a corona lo rende anche più allegro e spiritoso. Ecco, ora sono soddisfatta:-)

Done, I made the first attempt all over again. I was definitely not satisfied, too hard to get that button in the hole, plus it was not in the middle (not that I call myself miss perfection...at all...) and the effect was all twisted as it is anyway, but in this case it is all due to the fact that I am using a jacket, a material that has its own "shape" as I would describe it. Took it apart and cut the pages in half, now it's really a pocket sketchbook, and the yellow button with the shape of a crown cap gives it a fun and less serious tone. Well, now I am satisfied :-)

Primo tentativo di utilizzare la vecchia giacca scozzese...

E' tardi e sono stanca...ma almeno dopo tanto tempo senza "fare" ho portato a termine un tentativo: quando stavo per tagliare il tessuto della giacca ho avuto l'illuminazione...wooohooooo, ci sono una tasca e un'asola già fatte!!! Proviamo a sfruttarli! L'idea della tasca non è stata male, anche se una piccola parte è rimasta "coinvolta" nella rilegatura. Dell'asola non sono soddisfatta, è scomoda ed è davvero difficile infilare il bottone, ma visto che era per me, senza lo stress del perfezionismo, un piccolo sforzo posso anche farlo ;-)
Ho usato alcuni fogli già tagliati che avevo in giro e dei fogli squadrati Fabriano.

It's late and I am tired... but at least after so long without anything "made" I brought to the end this attempt: while I was ready to cut the fabric of the jacket I went woooohooooo, there is a buttonhole and a pocket already made, let's try to use them! The idea was ok with the pocket, even though a little part of it was "involved" in the binding. With the buttonhole it was not that easy and it's pretty hard to fit the button in it.... but I was making the first sketchbook for myself, so I had no stress of perfectionism ;-) I used some sheets I had around, already cut and some squared drawing paper.

Recycling, upcycling....decluttering!

Ecco, il titolo è in inglese perchè c'è questa versione della parola, UPCYCLING per la quale in Italiano non trovo corrispondenza (ma non sono una traduttrice professionista, magari la versione italiana esiste) che mi piace proprio tanto. Ho sempre associato il riciclo a dare uno scopo a qualcosa che altrimenti sarebbe diventato rifiuto, invece "upcycling" per me è dare una NUOVA vita a qualcosa che già ha un suo utilizzo, ma è magari diventato vecchio, fuori moda, obsoleto. Quindi, alla ricerca di nuovi materiali per creare i miei quaderni ho deciso di ripulire anche l'armadio. Quei vestiti hanno una storia e quindi per me è, come al solito, difficile liberarmene....ma ad un certo punto SI DEVE, specialmente quando non si ha a disposizione una stanza-guardaroba o un armadio 12 ante... è questione di sopravvivenza domestica:-)
Quindi ecco la giacca scozzese comprata negli anni 90, chi non aveva una giacca scozzese in quegli anni? Con questa ci ho pure fatto un colloquio a Milano per lavorare a Disneyworld, poi la camicia bianca che ho usato tanto quando lavoravo al ristorante (e quando si lavorava con un professionista come il mio papà non esisteva un altro abbigliamento: camicia bianca, pantaloni o gonna nera e MAI scarpe da ginnastica...come cambiano i tempi), la camicia a righe che alla mia mamma stava tanto bene (a me meno), l'aveva portata in dono la zia dall'America, e i miei cargo-pants, che avevo comprato nella mia ultima estate "alla pari" in Ohio...che anno!
Tutti capi che magari qualcun'altro potrebbe utilizzare ma da cui faccio fatica a separarmi...cosi li levo dall'armadio e libero spazio però li uso per creare qualcosa di nuovo, e a modo mio dò personalità e valore alle mie creazioni;-)

 So, the title of this post it's in English because there is this word UPCYCLING which I can't translate properly in Italian (but I am not a professional translator, there probably is one word for it) but I really like. I have always associated the word RECYCLING with the idea of giving a second life to something that would be otherwise thrown away. This upcycling instead, gives me the idea of giving a NEW life to something still having its own purpose but maybe became old, out of fashion. So, looking for new materials for my creations I decided to clean up my closet. These clothes have a story and memories that make it so difficult to let them go... but at one point you HAVE TO, it's a matter of "domestic survival", especially when you don't have a separate room as a wardrobe, or a 12 door closet :-)
Here we go then, with my tartan jacket, bought in the 90s, who didn't have a tartan jacket in those years? I remember I had an interview in Milan with this jacket for Disneyworld, then we have the white blouse I used so much when I was working in the reastaurant (and with a professional like my dad there was no other uniform allowed: white shirt, black trousers or skirt and NEVER trainers or sneakers...how things have changed), this striped shirt that looked so nice on my mom (less on me) that our aunt brought as a present from the States, and those cargo pants that I bought during my last summer as an "au pair" in Ohio...what a year!
All clothes that maybe someone else could use, but for those memories they bring back to my mind it's so hard to give them away... so I am taking them off the closet, leaving some space and I am using them to make something new, giving this way personality and that something special to my creations;-)

La Casa di Ninni

Allora, questo post nasce da questo di Balìa che mi è capitato di leggere in una di quelle "passeggiate notturne online" che si concede una mamma quando tutti finalmente dormono... Ho trovato nel suo racconto cosi tante cose con cui ero d'accordo che mi è sembrato giusto aggiungere anche la mia voce a quello che spero diventi un coro entusiasta. Anche io sono stata contattata da Rita, a ottobre se non sbaglio, e ascoltandola anche io pensavo che era tutto troppo bello, che ci doveva essere una fregatura....e poi: visto il livello del progetto: volete davvero me? Le mie creazioni? Ma il suo entusiasmo è contagioso e poi mi sono detta: se è una fregatura ok, non sarà la prima e forse neanche l'ultima, se invece è l'occasione giusta, proviamoci, che cos' ho da perdere? Infatti al momento, prima del lancio del sito de "La Casa di Ninni" che tutte ormai attendiamo con curiosità e trepidazione, ho perso alcune delle poche ore concesse per dormire, un pò di tempo per scovare tessuti nuovi, cartoncini e studiare, scrivere, tradurre parte del lavoro; ma tutto ciò mi ha regalato di nuovo quell'entusiasmo, quella scarica creativa che ti percorre la schiena e non ti fa comunque dormire bene, perchè le idee frullano rumorosamente in testa e colori e parole si mischiano, rifletti su quello che hai appena fatto e poteva essere fatto meglio, oppure è perfetto e ne sei soddisfatta...insomma, il piacere di aver rimesso le mani in pasta, dopo che questa creatività si era limitata solo alle idee (a milioni) che però la vita quotidiana e i due bimbi rendevano difficili da realizzare. Ecco, con questo progetto dedicato al MADE IN ITALY per bambini mi sono resa conto che ce la si può fare se davvero si vuole, che vale la pena perdere qualche ora di sonno, che se ci si crede, ma forse ancora più importante se qualcun'altro dimostra di credere in te, si può diventare SUPERMAMME (a tratti però...sporadici....il mio disastro di casa e il frigo semivuoto testimoniano che ancora c'è molto da lavorare sul SUPER....). Quindi grazie per l'occasione alla Nickel International, buona fortuna a La Casa di Ninni e una pacca sulla spalla a tutte/i noi, che abbiamo partecipato perchè crediamo che l'handmade abbia un valore non solo economico, ma che apporta al prodotto, qualunque esso sia, un carico di passione, entusiasmo, amore e gioia che non si possono trovare in altri prodotti. In fondo si parla di CREAZIONI, no? E la parola in se nasconde un mondo :-)
Speriamo che questa sia l'occasione di dimostrare che gli Italiani sanno come usare le mani, sanno ricordare e valorizzare le tradizioni, sanno innovarle, sanno apprezzare e creare IL BELLO. E dovremmo ricordarci più spesso che questa Italia che vale c'è e funziona, impariamo ad esserne orgogliosi!


Ok, this post comes from this I read on Balìa's blog, which I read during one of those "night walk around the web" that a mommy can take only when everybody is sleeping... reading her words I found so many things I agree with that I decided it was time to give a voice to my thoughts, hoping many will add their voice to the choir. I was called by Rita, in October I think, and listening to her I had the same doubts: it's too good to be true, there must be a trick somewhere...plus: considering the level of the project: do you really want me? My creations? But Rita's enthisiasm is contagious and I told myself: well, if there is a trick it will not be the first time I am disappointed, and there are good chaces it wouldn't be the last; but if IT IS the one chance I've been waiting for, what do I have to lose? In fact, right now, before the launch of the site "La Casa di Ninni" that we all wait for anxiously, all I lost was a few hours of sleep (not that as a double mommy I get many), a bit of time to find new and old fabrics and some good paper, and some more time to study, write and translate part of the ideas; but all of this brought back the creative enthusiasm, that doesn't let you sleep even when you're in bed, thinking about what you've just done, that is exactly as you wanted it, or could have been better the other way...those ideas that running and flying inside our brains make too much noise to sleep. After all, that is the enthusiasm that "putting your hands back into the dough" makes it possible, after all the time that this new life, filled with the joy, commitment and stress realated to my two children made my (millions) ideas filling my head only. So, with this new project all dedicated to the MADE IN ITALY for kids, I learnt that IT IS possible if you really want it, it worth giving up some sleeping hours if you really believe in what you're doing or (probably even more important) if someone else truly believes in your talent, you can become a SUPER MOMMY (at times only....short times...as my disaster house and my almost-empty fridge are testifying, I still have to work a lot on the SUPER...). So, thank you to Nickel International for this chance, good luck to La Casa di Ninni and a pat on the back to all of us that accepted the challenge because we believe that a handmade object has in itself a load of passion, love and joy that no other item will ever have, we call them CREATIONS after all, and that word says it all:-)
I hope this will be another chance to show the world that Italians know how to use their hands, they remember and respect traditions, they can update them, they know how to create and enjoy BEAUTY. We should remember more often that this Italy worth and exists, let's be proud of it!
